The Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Salum, today, 21 September 2026, met with a delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO), and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), who are in Tanzania to conduct the National Workshop on the Effective Implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006).

During the meeting, Mr. Salum thanked the delegation for selecting the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) to participate in the project. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring effective implementation and compliance with the provisions of the MLC, 2006, to promote decent work and safeguard the rights and welfare of seafarers.

Mr. Salum further emphasized the Government’s commitment to continued collaboration with stakeholders through the tripartite mechanism involving the Government, employers, and workers. He noted that sustained cooperation among these stakeholders is essential to improving seafarers’ working and living conditions and ensuring the effective implementation of the Convention.

The meeting underscores Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening maritime labour standards, promoting decent work in the maritime sector, and ensuring that seafarers’ rights and welfare remain a priority in line with the objectives of the MLC, 2006.

The International Labour Organization (ILO), under the ILO’s multi-year project titled “Promoting Decent Work in the Maritime Sector,” in collaboration with the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) are conducting a four-day training programme on the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), at Golden Tulip Hotel in Dar es Salaam, from 20 to 23 October 2026.
