Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Department of Transport, in collaboration with the Association for Women in the Maritime Sector in Eastern and Southern Africa (WOMESA), commemorated International Women’s Day on March 10, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.

The event gathered women in the maritime sector from all-over sub-Saharan region including countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, and South Africa to discuss the challenges they face in the industry.

In her opening remarks, British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Her Excellency Marianne Young, encouraged the attendees to use the event as the platform of sharing their experiences and discuss the challenges women faces in the predominantly male-dominated maritime sector.

"This event offers a chance to celebrate successes and explore strategies for overcoming obstacles and provide the opportunity for delegates at various career stages to learn from each other, with more experienced professionals mentoring younger colleagues," she emphasized.

Further, Ambassador Young praised the women’s ability to influence the industry and make ports safer and more inclusive while contributing to the economy.

Dr. Devotha Mandanda, Principal Legal Officer from TASAC and the President of WOMESA, expressed gratitude to the UK Department of Transport for organizing the event and selecting Tanzania as the host country. She noted the importance of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code in ensuring safety in maritime operations and reflected on its connection to gender equality and women’s advancement in the sector.

In his closing remarks, TASAC Director General Mohamed Salum underscored the critical role of women in the maritime industry, stressing that their participation is essential for the sector’s growth, sustainability, and inclusivity.

The event brought together women from the maritime sector across Eastern and Southern Africa, including delegates from Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, and South Africa, all united to discuss gender challenges and celebrate women’s achievements in the field.
