TASAC HOSTS MOESNA DELEGATION TO ADVANCE MARITIME CAPACITY AND SAFETY STANDARDS

The Director General of Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation, Mr. Mohammed Salum, received a delegation of consultants engaged by the Maritime Organization of Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa during a courtesy call aimed at strengthening collaboration in the maritime sector.

The delegation was led by Mr. Enock Okemwa, HSC, Lead Consultant from Bandari Maritime Academy in Mombasa, alongside Mr. Michael Njogah, a subject matter expert and curriculum developer. The meeting underscored the importance of regional cooperation in advancing maritime capacity and aligning training frameworks with international standards.

During the discussions, Mr. Salum emphasized the Government’s commitment to enhancing safety and security across Tanzania’s coastal and inland waterways. He highlighted the critical role of structured training, certification, and skills development in building a competent maritime workforce capable of addressing emerging challenges in the sector.

The consultants outlined their mandate to conduct a comprehensive Situational Analysis and Training Needs Assessment across key state agencies. The exercise aims to identify existing gaps and recommend a harmonized Regional Coxswain Training Curriculum among MOESNA Member States.

This initiative seeks to ensure uniform standards of training and certification, strengthen safety and security frameworks, minimize maritime accidents, and enhance the efficiency of maritime transport.

The visit marked a significant step toward promoting safe, secure, and sustainable shipping practices in the United Republic of Tanzania. Particular emphasis was placed on the integration of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) frameworks to ensure that existing skills and experience within the maritime workforce are formally recognized.

The outcomes of this engagement are expected to contribute to the development of a more resilient maritime sector, fostering efficiency, regulatory compliance, and regional integration in line with global best practices.
