TASAC HOSTS EMSA INSPECTION TEAM ON MARITIME TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION SYSTEM
The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), today, 25 May 2026, commenced an inspection programme with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) focusing on Tanzania’s Maritime Education, Training and Certification System. The inspection exercise is being conducted in Dar es Salaam from 25 to 29 May 2026.
The EMSA delegation is led by Capt. Ioannis Mispinas, Senior Project Officer, accompanied by Eng. Jaime Gonzalez Gil, Senior Project Officer.
The team was welcomed by TASAC Director General, Mr. Mohamed Salum, and appreciated their visit to Tanzania, which aims to conduct the inspection programme expected at strengthening maritime training and certification standards.
Mr. Salum reaffirmed TASAC’s commitment to ensuring Tanzania continues to implement international maritime standards in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention).
The opening session featured presentations from both the EMSA inspection team and TASAC officials, including an overview of the inspection methodology and validation of the inspection programme.
According to the inspection programme, the exercise will assess several key areas, including quality standards systems, programme and course approvals, monitoring and evaluation of training and assessments, qualification of instructors and assessors, certification and endorsement procedures, medical standards, fraud prevention mechanisms, and assessment of competence for seafarers.
The exercise brings together officials responsible for implementing the STCW Convention in Tanzania. The inspection forms part of ongoing international efforts to ensure that Tanzania’s maritime training and certification framework continues to meet globally accepted standards for seafarers.
