TASAC DIRECTOR GENERAL PARTICIPATED IN THE REGIONAL LAKE VICTORIA BASIN WEEK

The Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Salum, today, May 19, 2026, participated in the Inaugural Regional Lake Victoria Basin Week Stakeholders' Forum and Development Partners' Round Table, officiated by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Ms. Rose Zacharia. The forum, taking place at the Malaika Hotel in Mwanza City, has brought together representatives from the East African Community (EAC) Partner States, including Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi, as well as other stakeholders and development partners.

The forum, organised by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC), under EAC, is being held under the theme “Shared Waters, Shared Future: Uniting for a Sustainable Lake Victoria Basin.” It aims to strengthen regional cooperation, promote the sustainable use of Lake Victoria's resources, and identify strategic investment and development priorities within the basin.

During the forum, Mr. Salum joined regional institutions, transport authorities, development partners, and maritime stakeholders in discussions focusing on transport safety, blue economy opportunities, and regional connectivity.

The discussions covered several thematic areas, including water security and quality management, transport and blue economy development, climate change resilience, disaster risk reduction, and institutional strengthening for sustainable basin management.

The forum also provides a platform for stakeholders to share experiences, showcase innovations, and discuss collaborative strategies to enhance maritime safety, environmental protection, and socio-economic development within the Lake Victoria Basin.

On May 20, 2026, development partners and regional institutions are expected to discuss funding priorities and strategic interventions to support sustainable projects and initiatives across the basin. The official commemoration will take place on May 21, 2026, in Mwanza, bringing together leaders and stakeholders from across the East African region.

As part of the event, Mr. Salum also visited exhibition booths at the Nyamhongolo ‘Nane Nane’ Grounds, where various institutions and stakeholders showcase innovations, projects, and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable management of the Lake Victoria Basin and advancing socio-economic development in the region.
