The Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Salum, officially opened the Port Security and Safety of Navigation Programme National Assessment Mission and Consultation Workshop in Dar es Salaam on August 24, 2026.

The five-day mission has brought together national stakeholders and international experts to assess Tanzania’s existing maritime security and navigational safety capacities. Its findings will contribute to the development of a sustainable Regional Policy on Port Security and Safety of Navigation for Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region.

The visiting delegation comprises Dr. Michelle Stallone, Regional Coordinator of the Port Security and Safety of Navigation Programme, together with Mr. William Azuh and Mr. Mourad Ghorbel, key experts from Open Plan Consulting Srl.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mr. Salum said Tanzania’s extensive Indian Ocean coastline and strategic ports make the country an important gateway for international trade, regional integration and national development. He noted that this strategic position also places a significant responsibility on the country to protect its ports, maritime domain and navigation systems against both traditional and emerging threats.

Mr. Salum emphasised that maritime and port security extends beyond technical compliance, describing it as a national responsibility that safeguards Tanzania’s sovereignty, supports the growth of the blue economy and protects lives and livelihoods.

During the mission, participants will review existing policies, legal and institutional frameworks, operational capabilities and coordination mechanisms. They will also identify capacity gaps and propose practical measures for strengthening port security, navigational safety and cooperation among relevant institutions.

The assessment mission demonstrates Tanzania’s commitment to maintaining secure ports and safe navigation while enhancing inter-agency and regional cooperation. It is also expected to support the development of resilient maritime systems that facilitate efficient trade, protect the marine environment and promote sustainable blue economy growth across the region.
