TASAC AND IMO CONDUCT WORKSHOP ON STRENGTHENING MARITIME SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE EASTERN AND SOUTHERN INDIAN OCEAN REGION

Tanzania, through the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has convened a regional workshop aims at enhancing port security and navigation safety across Eastern and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean (ESA-IO) region.

The five-day workshop, officially opened yesterday at the Protea Marriott Hotel in Dar es Salaam, was officiated by Ms. Stella Katondo, Director of the Department of Safety and Environment at the Ministry of Transport, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Katondo emphasized the significance of the event, noting that it brings together maritime experts, port authorities, security agencies, and other key stakeholders in the maritime transport sector.

“This workshop involves national drills and exercises on port security and safety of navigation, a week-long initiative designed to enhance national and regional preparedness in responding to maritime threats and incidents. It includes hands-on drills and collaborative training sessions,” said Ms. Katondo.

Running from 6th to 10th October 2025, the workshop focuses on strengthening maritime safety, risk management, and emergency response capabilities across the ESA-IO region. The initiative also supports sustainable development and promotes secure seaborne trade through improved coordination and capacity building.

Through a series of exercises, knowledge-sharing sessions, and technical collaborations, participants are expected to develop stronger regional cooperation and resilience in addressing maritime security challenges.

Ms. Katondo underscored the importance of regional solidarity in maritime governance, stating: “Strong collaboration is essential to ensure the safety of our seas and the security of our ports.”

The workshop marks a significant step toward building a safer, more secure, and efficient maritime environment within the ESA-IO region, aligning with global efforts to safeguard maritime transport and promote sustainable ocean governance.
