TANZANIA HOSTS IMO PORT SECURITY AND SAFETY OF NAVIGATION WORKSHOP

Tanzania hosted the National Consultation Workshop of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Port Security and Safety of Navigation Programme (PSP), held today, 5th February 2025, at Golden Tulip Hotel.
In her opening remarks, Stella Katondo, the Director of Transport and Environment at the Ministry of Transport (MoT), speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Godius Kahyarara, called upon participants to engage vigorously, share their invaluable insights, and forge collaborative solutions that would profoundly enhance the maritime sector in Tanzania.
“As we reflect on the recommendations of the 2nd Steering Committee of the PSP, the significance of this National Consultation Workshop emerges clearly. These gatherings serve as vital platforms for fostering collaboration, ensuring that all relevant entities align on the implementation of this essential Programme,” she passionately stated.
Officer in Charge at the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), Raj Mohabeer urged member countries to uphold the International Standards and regulations established by the IMO. He expressed the urgency of addressing existing capacity gaps in compliance through strategic partnerships with organizations such as the UNODC, IMO, and Interpol.
On the other hand, Director General for Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mohamed Salum highlighted the project’s vital relevance to TASAC, reaffirming that its objectives align seamlessly with the corporation’s mandate to regulate maritime transport activities.
“This initiative is crucial for enhancing port security and navigating safely in the Eastern and Southern Africa Indian Ocean Region, fully aligning with the African Union Integrated Maritime Strategy 2050,” he declared.
The two-day IMO PSP Workshop, running from 5th to 6th February 2025, promises to engage a dynamic array of representatives from both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, encompassing key ministries and agencies dedicated to advancing maritime safety and security.
