REGIONAL MARITIME SINGLE WINDOW WORKSHOP DELIVERS ROADMAP FOR FASTER, CHEAPER TRADE
The regional workshop on the IMO Compendium, Maritime Single Window (MSW), and Port Community Systems (PCS) has concluded today, April 24, 2026, in Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre, setting a clear path toward faster, more efficient, and lower-cost maritime trade across the region.
Closing the workshop on behalf of the Minister for Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, the Director General of the Zanzibar Ports Corporation, Mr. Akif Ali, underscored that digitalization of port operations is no longer optional but central to delivering national and regional economic transformation under Vision 2050.
Mr. Ali highlighted that full implementation of MSW and PCS will significantly cut vessel clearance times, reduce paperwork, and improve real-time coordination among shipping lines, port authorities, and regulators, ultimately accelerating cargo movement and boosting trade competitiveness.
“These systems will directly translate into shorter port stays, lower transaction costs, and improved service delivery for all maritime users,” he said.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Salum, noted that the MSW is expected to eliminate redundant data submissions and streamline regulatory processes, creating a single digital entry point for all port formalities. This shift, he said, will strengthen Tanzania’s digital infrastructure while positioning its ports as efficient regional trade hubs.
Mr. Salum further emphasized that compliance with the International Maritime Organization Facilitation Convention now requires all member states to implement MSW, which places urgency on accelerating deployment.
Representing the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Ms. Mwanaulu Mwajita called on countries to move from commitments to implementation, stressing that coordinated regional action will be key to unlocking the full benefits of digital maritime systems.
The workshop leaves behind a strengthened network of regional partners and a shared commitment to building a seamless, paperless maritime environment that supports trade growth, transparency, and economic resilience.
