The week-long inspection mission by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on Tanzania’s Maritime Education, Training and Certification System concluded today, 29 May 2026, in Dar es Salaam.
The inspection exercise, which commenced on 25 May 2026, was conducted as part of ongoing international efforts to assess Tanzania’s implementation of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) and to ensure continued compliance with internationally accepted maritime standards.
The EMSA delegation, led by Capt. Ioannis Mispinas, Senior Project Officer, and Eng. Jaime Gonzalez Gil, Senior Project Officer, undertook a comprehensive assessment of Tanzania’s maritime training and certification framework.
During the closing session, the EMSA Team expressed appreciation to the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) for the warm hospitality, excellent coordination, and cooperation extended throughout the inspection mission. The team also commended Tanzania’s commitment to implementing the STCW Convention and acknowledged efforts to strengthen maritime education, training, and certification systems.
Speaking at the closing meeting, TASAC Director General, Mr. Mohamed Salum, thanked the EMSA Team for their professionalism, constructive engagement, and valuable observations made during the inspection exercise.
The Director General also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the EMSA Team for their commitment and cooperation throughout the exercise. He noted that Tanzania remains committed to ensuring that its maritime training and certification system continues to meet international standards and expectations.
Mr. Salum further noted that the inspection exercise had provided a valuable opportunity for learning, experience sharing, and institutional improvement. He emphasised the importance of Tanzania attaining and maintaining EMSA recognition, noting that such recognition would further enhance the country's standing within the global maritime community and create greater employment opportunities for Tanzanian seafarers in the international shipping industry.
The EMSA Team informed the meeting that a draft inspection report containing the team's findings, observations, and recommendations will be submitted within ninety (90) days.
